Last night, Rabbit Hole Ensemble was honored to receive six nominations from the New York Innovative Theatre Awards, which recognizes the work of off-off broadway “indie theatre” companies. The nomination ceremony was an energetic, well-attended event. I met some old friends that I hadn’t seen for a while and ran into some brand new ones that I’d just made in the past month or so.

When the nominees were announced individually by category, a curious thing happened. (more…)

How Do You Put Up a Show? First Ask Why…

I get asked all the time by recent grads, long-former students, and people who I’ve just come to know: how do you put up a show in NYC? I always end up giving the same basic answer: it isn’t easy and it doesn’t get any easier.

After over sixteen years of making theatre in NYC I still face and wrestle with the same issues that anyone who initiates independent theatre does: space and time. It’s all about space and time. From Aeschylus to Einstein to the fella on the phone trying to find someplace affordable to rehearse: if you don’t have space and you don’t have time…you don’t have anything.
